X / Twitter video downloader: video and images at original quality

The question with an X / Twitter video downloader is not whether it can grab the file, it is whether it gets you the original spec: the images on the page are compressed copies, and video ships as several bitrate streams. Three things to know before you download from X

1. Being signed in is close to a prerequisite

X keeps tightening its limits on anonymous access, and when you are not signed in plenty of content simply never loads. if the page cannot load it, a tool cannot read it either. That is why browser extensions are far steadier on X than online services - an extension works inside your normal session, so its requests look exactly like browsing.

2. Right-click Save As gets you the compressed image

X image URLs carry a spec parameter, and the page loads a compressed display version. A tool swaps that parameter for the original. Video arrives as several bitrate streams, so something has to pick the highest one, and right-click usually cannot save video at all.

3. File naming decides whether you can find anything six months later

X / Twitter downloads: common questions

Can I download without signing in?

Mostly no. X keeps tightening anonymous access, so when you are not signed in the content never loads, which leaves a tool nothing to read.

Once you are signed in, extensions such as Media Harvest for X have the highest success rate. Online tools (Cobalt.tools) usually manage public tweets, but fail as soon as rate limiting kicks in.

How do I get images at their original size?

Use a tool rather than right-click Save As. Media Harvest for X swaps the spec parameter in the image URL for the original value, and for video it picks the highest of the available bitrate streams.

The difference is easy to see: the compressed copy is fine on screen, but it shows the moment you zoom in or reuse it.

Can I download all the media from one account?

Not with an extension - that is one click at a time.

Use yt-dlp on the account media tab URL handles it in bulk, and with --download-archive it resumes incrementally. Slow the request pace down so you do not trip rate limiting.

Why did my GIF download as a video?

That is expected. A GIF on X has already been converted to a short silent video (MP4), and the platform only labels it GIF in the interface. So the MP4 you got is the original file.

If you need an actual GIF, you have to convert it yourself.

Can I repost what I download?

Saving it to look at yourself is usually fine; republishing, re-cutting or commercial use all need the creator's permission, otherwise it is infringement, and it breaks X's Terms of Service too.
