A general-purpose sniffer extension for Firefox: it detects downloadable media on the page and lists the available resolutions. Its Facebook compatibility is good for its class, and that matters, because Facebook's player is built in an unusual way and a lot of tools fail on it. It is free, but it does not do bulk downloads.

What is Video Downloader Plus?
Video Downloader Plus is a general-purpose media sniffer extension for Firefox that supports Facebook, TikTok, Instagram, Vimeo and X. It works by watching the page's media requests, then listing the video streams it finds, along with their resolutions, so you can pick one.
Its most useful trait is its compatibility with Facebook. Facebook's player and media delivery are built in an unusual way and change often, so plenty of general-purpose tools have a low success rate there. This one held up relatively well in our testing.
It is completely free with no quota, but it does not do bulk downloads or audio extraction. It is built for "save a video while you are browsing the page," not for building an asset library.

It listens to requests and spots media streams
It hooks into the browser's request interception layer and records media responses such as MP4 and HLS when it sees them, then shows them with their resolution and size. Because it does not rely on understanding the site, it often catches media even on pages with an unfamiliar structure.
Why Facebook needs special handling
Facebook cuts videos into segments and serves them with parameters that change often, so grabbing a single URL often will not get you the full video. This extension has been adapted to Facebook's segment and manifest structure, which is why it does better there.
Why it does not do bulk
Sniffing is scoped to the current page by nature: it can only see requests made by the page you have open. Bulk downloading means actively walking a list page and requesting each item, which is a different mechanism, and this extension does not have it.
How to use Video Downloader Plus
Sniffer extensions all work much the same way. The difference here is that it lists the detected resolutions clearly and lets you choose.
- Install it from the Firefox Add-ons store. It only comes in a Firefox version. Read the permissions before you install: sniffer extensions need fairly broad request-monitoring permissions.
- Sniffing can only capture requests that have actually been sent, so let the video play for a few seconds first. Only then does the extension icon show how many resources it has detected.
- Click the extension icon to see the detected streams with their resolution and size. Pick the highest one. Streams that are unusually small are usually preview clips or ads.
- Content in private Facebook groups requires you to be logged in and have access. Public videos and Reels have a higher success rate; if nothing gets detected, refresh the page and play the video again.

Why does the extension icon show nothing when I click it?
Because sniffing can only capture requests that have actually been sent. Let the video play for a few seconds first, and once the media requests go out, the extension will record them.
If it still shows nothing after playback, the page may use a delivery method it does not recognize, or the content may require login access. Refresh the page and try once more, and if that fails, switch tools.
Can it download YouTube?
No. YouTube's stream delivery and signing put up the strongest resistance of any platform, and pure sniffer extensions basically cannot get a usable, complete stream.
For YouTube, use yt-dlp or Stacher (they parse on your own machine and have the highest success rate), or 4K Video Downloader Plus.
Can it download videos from private Facebook groups?
If you are logged in yourself and actually have access to that group, it usually can. The extension works in your session, so whatever you can see, it can see.
Keep in mind that being able to download is not the same as being allowed to share. Content in private groups usually comes with stricter expectations and rules, and passing it on can raise privacy and copyright issues. See Terms of use.
