Turbo Downloader for Instagram is a browser extension that only serves Instagram. Once it is installed, download buttons show up next to posts, Reels and Stories while you browse Instagram on the web, and images come down at their original size, not the compressed version shown on the page.
Its core advantage is that it works inside your logged-in session. A lot of Instagram content is only visible when you are logged in: follower-only accounts, and Stories (which are only open to logged-in users anyway and vanish after 24 hours). Online tools do not have your cookies, so they cannot get any of this. The extension runs in your browser, so it has them by default.

- Install it from the Chrome Web Store. Then log in to Instagram on the web as usual in your browser. The extension needs that logged-in session to handle non-public content.
- A download button appears on the page. Videos save straight to MP4, and images come down at their original size. If the button does not show up, refresh the page once.
- For multi-image carousel posts you can download every item at once. Stories work the same way: you can save an account's whole current set of Stories in one go. Keep in mind they are gone after 24 hours, so if you want them, download them the same day.

Why can't online tools download Stories when this can?
Because the Stories endpoint requires a logged-in session, and the content drops out of public access after 24 hours. Online tools do not have your Instagram cookies, so their requests get refused outright.
The extension runs in your logged-in browser. Whatever you can see, it can see, so downloading comes along for free. By the same logic, follower-only posts can only be saved this way (or with yt-dlp and cookies passed by hand).
How much can the free version download?
It is freemium, and the free version has a download cap (per day or per session, depending on the version). Once you hit it, you wait for a reset or upgrade.
For large-scale archiving, the better option is yt-dlp with --cookies-from-browser: no caps, and it can resume incrementally. The cost is that you have to use a terminal.
Will the other person know I downloaded their content?
Downloading posts and Reels does not trigger any notification. One catch though: viewing a Story leaves a record on its own, and the other person can see you in the Story's viewer list. That has nothing to do with downloading, it happens the moment you open it.

Is it safe to install? Can it read my DMs?
The permissions it requests cover page data on the Instagram site, and in theory that scope includes everything you can see on IG on the web. This is a built-in risk of this kind of extension, not something unique to this one.
To lower the risk: install only from the official store, limit site access to instagram.com in the extension settings, disable it when you are not using it, and watch for review changes after the developer changes hands. If you cannot accept that permission scope, use yt-dlp with cookies passed by hand instead (a smaller, more controllable scope).
Can I use the downloaded images in my own designs?
As a personal reference, it is usually fine. Using them directly in published work, commercial materials or your own social media content is a copyright issue, and you need the creator's permission.
