Tools that genuinely pull 2160p and up and merge the separate audio track properly. That second part is the one that matters — plenty of tools will hand you a 4K video track with no sound in it.

Let's get the terms straight
To see why 4K downloading isn't simple, you need one technical fact: above 1080p, video and audio are stored as separate tracks(that's DASH delivery).
Which means a 4K file with sound takes three steps: pull the video track, pull the audio track, then mux the two into one file. Step three needs something like FFmpeg, and that costs CPU time.
- Desktop apps do the merge on your own machine, on your CPU, which is why the output is consistent.
- Web tool would have to do it server-side for every single request, which gets expensive fast. So they usually hand you a lower-res pre-muxed version, or just a silent 4K video track. That's the whole story behind no sound.
One more: running yt-dlp yourself and forgetting FFmpeg causes the same thing — you'll get 360p, or silent HD. Stacher and Seal bundle FFmpeg, so you get HD with sound out of the box.

Why does my 4K download have no sound?
Because you only got the video track and nothing merged the audio in. Usually one of two things: a web tool, where the server doesn't merge, or yt-dlp with no FFmpeg installed.
The fix: install FFmpeg and make sure it's on your PATH, or switch to something that bundles it, like Stacher, 4K Video Downloader Plus, Seal.
Which tools handle 8K?
yt-dlp, Stacher, 4K Video Downloader Plus all go to 8K, assuming the source really is 8K.
Heads up: 8K files are huge, ten minutes can be several GB, and playback wants hardware decoding. For most things 4K is plenty.
My HDR download looks washed out. What gives?
HDR color metadata, meaning color space and transfer function, has to be written correctly at mux time, or an SDR player shows it dull or oversaturated.
The ones that get this right are yt-dlp and 4K Video Downloader Plus. Your player needs HDR support too, otherwise the problem is playback, not the download.
Can any web tool actually do 4K?
Cobalt.tools muxes on the server when merging is needed, which it calls tunnel mode, so it can give you higher resolutions with sound. No 8K though, and fewer resolution options than a desktop app.
SaveFrom.net claims 4K but was inconsistent in testing — often 4K isn't in the list, or it is and comes out silent. For dependable 4K, go desktop.
