Instagram video downloader: posts, Reels, Stories and full-size images

The defining thing about Instagram is that a lot of it is only visible once you are signed in: follower-only accounts, Stories. That sets the hard limit on what any Instagram video downloader can reach - online tools cannot get at it, and only something running inside your logged-in session can.

Two lines that divide what Instagram tools can reach

1. Being signed in decides what is visible at all

Stories are open to signed-in users only and disappear after 24 hours; a follower-only account needs you to be an approved follower. an online tool holds none of your cookies, so it can never reach any of this - not because it is badly built, but because the request is refused outright.

Only two kinds of tool handle this content: Browser extension (which runs inside the session you are already signed in to, such as Turbo Downloader for Instagram), and a local tool you feed cookies to by hand (yt-dlp with --cookies-from-browser).

2. The picture on the page is not the full-size original

Instagram image URLs carry size parameters, so what loads on the page is a compressed display version. right-click and Save Image As gets you exactly that compressed copy. A tool swaps the parameter back to the original spec, and the difference is obvious once you are collecting design reference.

Every item in a carousel is delivered in one go the moment you open the post, so pulling all ten at once is technically fewer requests than paging through by hand.

Instagram downloads: common questions

Why can online tools not download Stories?

Because the Stories endpoint requires a signed-in session, and the content drops out of public reach after 24 hours. An online tool holds none of your Instagram cookies, so the request is refused outright.

The only options for Stories are browser extensions such as Turbo Downloader for Instagram and similar, or cookie-fed yt-dlp.

How do I get the full-size image instead of a thumbnail?

Use a tool rather than right-click Save As. Turbo Downloader swaps the size parameter in the image URL back to the original spec.

One caveat: original here means the largest version stored on Instagram's servers, and Instagram compresses what people upload, so it is not the same thing as the creator's source file.

Will the other person know I downloaded it?

Downloading a post or a Reel generates no notification at all.

One thing to watch, though: viewing a Story does leave a record, and they can see you in the viewer list. That has nothing to do with downloading - it happens the moment you open it.

Can I download from a private account?

If you are an approved follower, a browser extension or cookie-fed yt-dlp will do it. but there is an important line here: setting an account to private is an explicit statement about who gets to see it, so saving that content and passing it around is not only a copyright question, it is a privacy one.

How do I bulk download everything from one account?

Turbo Downloader grabs whatever has already loaded, but the free version caps the volume.

For archiving at scale, use yt-dlp with --cookies-from-browser: no volume cap, and it resumes incrementally. Hammering the API trips rate limiting quickly, so slow the pace down and keep your main account out of it.

Can I use downloaded images in my own design work?

For personal reference, usually fine; putting it in published work, commercial material or your own social posts turns it into a copyright matter, and you need the creator's permission. Instagram's Terms of Service also prohibit unauthorised reuse of content.

A private inspiration library is low risk; anything outward-facing needs clearance first.
