Free Vimeo Downloader is a browser extension that works with Vimeo only. Vimeo leans toward professional creators, and a lot of its content is high-bitrate original uploads with better picture quality than social platforms. So "can I get the original quality?" matters more here than anywhere else.

What really sets it apart is embedded players. Vimeo is widely used as the video host for third-party websites: designer portfolios, online courses, company websites. Those pages are not on vimeo.com, and the player is embedded in an iframe, so general-purpose downloaders often cannot get the media address from that setup. This extension is built to handle exactly that case.

It is free with no usage caps, but it does not do bulk, and it does not support password-protected videos. The feature set is narrow, but it is genuinely useful within its small niche.

It reads the stream list from the player config

The Vimeo player loads a block of config data that lists the video stream address for each quality tier. The extension reads that config, shows you the available tiers and picks out the highest-bitrate one.

Why embedded players need special handling

When embedded, the player sits inside an iframe, and the outer page's domain has nothing to do with Vimeo. Tools that only match by domain skip the page entirely, because it does not look like a video site. This one checks whether the page contains a Vimeo player iframe, then goes in and reads the config.

Why password-protected videos will not download

A password-protected video only hands over its stream list after the password check passes. Even if you already entered the password and are watching, the config is fetched along a different path than for public videos, and this extension does not handle that path. To download that kind of content, use yt-dlp and pass in the password flag.
